The Lighthouse as a Symbol
A lighthouse is a beautiful symbol of the radiating light of Christ. The refugees around our centers in the Middle East are coming from a dark place. War, death, depression, PTSD, and horrible living conditions are only a few examples of the darkness overwhelming the life of a refugee. Not only refugees are living in darkness though. Anyone who does not know the transformative love, grace, and hope of God is living in darkness.
As Christians, we are called by Jesus to be a light in the midst of the darkness of this world. At Horizons we have established our lighthouses strategically in order to help spread of the gospel among Muslims and we pray that God’s love will shine through our lighthouses and touch many people.
“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Establishing Lighthouses
Horizons International is establishing evangelism and discipleship centers, called “lighthouses,” across the entire MENA region. These lighthouses collaborate with networks of nearby churches to plant new believers into supportive congregations, and also to mobilize and train the churches for effective ministry among Muslims.
Each lighthouse maximizes its gospel impact by adapting to its local community, holistically addressing the spiritual and humanitarian needs of the people.
Many lighthouses are partially self-supporting through missional businesses run by Horizons staff, including a Christian daycare, car wash, music school, and two café/bookstores. But more importantly than generating income to increase sustainability, these facilities provide opportunities to boldly and publicly proclaim the gospel in difficult-to-reach areas.
Currently, Horizons operates 13 lighthouses in 5 countries, and we continue to establish more lighthouses in areas yet unreached by the gospel. God has given us the vision of raising up one-thousand lighthouses across the Muslim World!
